Description
The RIO External Cavity Laser (ECL) is a high-performance cost effective directly modulated component for telecom, datacom and sensing applications. The design is based on RIO’s proprietary planar technology (PLANEX) and consists of a high-speed gain chip coupled to a Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) with waveguide Bragg grating, forming a laser cavity with significant advantages, such as:

  • high speed direct modulation up to 10 Gbps
  • low chirp or negative chirp, resulting in long reach
  • low wavelength sensitivity to temperature and bias current
  • high output power
  • low power dissipation
  • narrow spectral linewidth

The device is designed in a miniature hermetically sealed TOSA package to meet the XFP MSA and the XMD TOSA MSA package requirements at low cost. The wavelength stability is provided by design, eliminating the need for wavelength lockers for DWDM. The RIO ECL combines high performance, comparable with externally modulated lasers, with the low cost and simplicity of directly modulated lasers, offering significant advantages over EML.

RIO ECL low cost proposition results from:

  • high yield for long reach TDM and DWDM
  • low cost components: outsourced gain chips and Planar Lightwave Circuits made on silicon wafers
  • high yield packaging from pre-tested components

RIO ECL TOSA is compatible with commercially available drivers. Several configurations of evaluation boards both with and without drivers are available to simplify TOSA  testing.
